I’m just not a consistent enough of a blogger to pay for a blog. I’ve already used up all my space for pics, so I’m moving till I can figure something else out. I hope that you will still follow me at http://jenscrafty13.blogspot.com/ 🙂
I was just about all caught up on my granny square a day when I found a square pattern I loved and then my whole idea changed. Originally I was going to just do 1 totally random granny square a day. I am new to reading patterns, so I was challenging myself to try a new one each day. But when I found this pattern I changed directions with my plan.
These are the ones I had done up till the pattern find (colors aren’t so great since the sun was going down.
Then these are the ones that changed my mind
I think my new plan of attack is going to be to stick with this single pattern but go with whatever color my mood is for the day. Of course chosen from whatever yarn I have laying around at the moment.
I have been busy. I started to work on my first crochet purse for a friends birthday. Its not picture worth yet, need a few more days on it. I had to rework the pattern I was using. I didn’t like the way it flowed, so I had to arrange it for my pattern reading skills. Is that bad etiquette?
And yet another project I have been working on is a blanket for my daughter, a granny ripple.
You can’t really tell but there is purple after the blue. Of course there is always a hitch in every project. The purple is my hitch. I was doing 5 rows of each color. And when I hit the second yellow I realized I had skipped a row of purple. So my plan is to keep going with only 4 purple then use purple as my boarder to make up for the lack of purple. I’m hoping to have this one done in the next 2 weeks. Teenagers are very pushy and she is being very impatient.
And last but not least. Today I took a break from my crochet projects to put together a little storage box for some of my yarn. I initially thought the box was much bigger. So imagine my surprise when I put it together and discovered just how bad my math really is LOL. Oh well, it still turned out really stinking cute once I added the fabric. It still needs a few finishing touches once my glue dries, But here is the general idea
And there you have it. What I have been up to this week. Oh ya and because of my game plan change for the granny square a day, I am now 3 days behind again
Today was the last day of winter break. I have been on the go non-stop since the first day of my kids two and a half week vacation from school. Half way through this last week, I realized that I really needed a me day, either that or my family was going to ask me to go away and not come home. So I put my plan in motion to get everything organized enough to take today off. And so I did. I have done nothing but sit on my butt all day long and crochet and watch TV. It has been glorious, especially since my husband has been so kind as to not complain about being on kid duty.
In an effort to uphold my aforementioned attempt at holding myself accountable, I joined my first crochet along, one granny square a day, for the entire year. By the end of the year I should have a wonderful afghan of memories. During my attempt at doing nothing but being sloth-like, I have been trying to catch up with the date. So far I have 4 squares made and am still going. Pictures to come.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
I am very new at this crafty thing. I am now however, new to the idea of it. I grew up with a very crafty mom. I never understood why, she would want to spend her time, cutting, gluing, taping, sandblasting, baking, icing…the list goes on. As a teenager had so many other grand ideas of what to do with my time. There was so much to do, so many parties, concerts, amusement parks and so on that I needed to go to with my friends in between working part time, and playing soccer for school, the park and the YMCA.
Even once I moved out of the house, got married and started a family of my own, I gawked at all the time and money my mom spent on crafting. It just made no sense to me. As my family expanded dabbled in scrap-booking which is still somewhat on the back burner. I also picked up a crochet hook while on bed rest in a attempt to calm my worries of the pregnancy. It never really developed into a love but I picked it up here and there to amuse myself. Again, neither of these developed into anything I LOVED.
While growing up my mom decorated cakes. That was her #1 true love. Every birthday I had, she decorated an elaborate cake. Every event I needed a cake for, she was there to save the day. I was always in awe of the masterpieces she came up with, yet had no interest in producing a masterpiece of my own.
About 2 years ago, my mom fell ill. While I’d like to think my mother immortal, the reality of it is, she isn’t. It hit me, that one day, she will not be here to decorate those cakes for her grandkids, and then what would we do? How would my kids know the wonder of saying “my mom/nana” made that cake, when people gasped at how beautiful it was? So I signed up for my first cake decorating class. Since then, I have taken a handful of classes, accumulated a substantial collection of supplies, and have even signed on as a Wilton cake instructor.
Here I am 2 years later, and I am a decent cake decorator. I volunteer to make cakes for everyone. And when they love it, they recommend me to friends and am sometimes able to make a few dollars. Does it stop here? NO!
A few months ago, I’m not exactly sure what prompted me to pick up my crochet needle, but I did. And guess what? It took. I am very much a beginner. I have no clue how to read a pattern. I watch a ton of youtube tutorials to accomplish anything, but I love it. I am obsessed. Christmas was tight this year, and so everyone close to me received crocheted gifts.
With the new year came a yearning to show my accomplishments. My husband has been working on a website for me to show my cakes. I of course, decided that I also needed to show my crocheting accomplishments. I did have a blog once years ago, that I kept up for a little over 2 years, but my desire to keep up with it sort of dwindled away until now.
I am determined to make 2012 a better year. My hopes for the year are to decorate many more cakes, crochet as much as possible and try even more new fun crafty projects. Of course with the fun comes the not so fun. I need to get my house back in order, lose all the weight I have put on over the last few years, and be a better mom and wife to my husband and kids. I’d like to chronicle my accomplishments, and keep track of my goals, and hold myself accountable for those things I need to work on. So here I am…Crafty and determined.
